Everyone would rather relax and enjoy their outside spaces than spend time cleaning patio furniture. That’s why at Williamsburg Wicker & Patio our designers recommend polywood products. Not only does this outdoor furniture look fantastic, but it’s also made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) that’s a breeze to clean.
Even though HDPE is incredibly durable, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations to avoid scratches, damage, or potential color fading. The biggest caveat is to take it easy! Abrasive cleaning solutions, stiff brushes, and high-powered pressure washers can do a lot of damage.
Here are some tips on keeping your polywood outdoor furniture looking great:
For a Quick Clean Break Out the Vacuum
If you’re planning a gathering on your patio or deck and can’t wait for things to dry, a vacuum and microfiber cloth is a quick fix. Make sure the setting on the vacuum or wet dry vac is on low and use a soft brush attachment so it doesn’t damage the furniture. Vacuums work great for getting dirt and debris out of crevices and grooves in HDPE outdoor furniture. Once the loose dirt, dust, and pollen are sucked up, use the cloth to wipe down all the surfaces and give it a quick polish.
Safe Cleaning Solutions
The two best options to use when cleaning poly outdoor furniture are mild dish soap and water or a solution using white vinegar.
For light cleaning, it couldn’t be much simpler. Just mix a small amount of mild soap with warm water and use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down the surface of the poly furniture. Then give it a quick rinse with the hose and let it dry in the sun or wipe it down with a microfiber towel.
When there are nasty stains or grime use a mixture of equal parts of warm water and white vinegar. Just like the soap and water solution use a soft cloth or sponge to apply it to the furniture and then give it a few minutes to work before wiping it off. This is particularly effective for tackling water rings or other stains.
For stubborn stains, Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work well on polywood, particularly if your furniture is white. To use it make sure the surface is clean and dry. Then allow it to work for a few minutes and then use a cloth to clean the area. Use a fresh magic eraser pad for each stain.
Should I Use a Wax?
While it isn’t absolutely necessary, you can take poly furniture maintenance to the next level by applying a thin coat of wax after finishing a thorough cleaning. You can find wax suitable for HDPE products at patio furniture suppliers and most big box stores.
The reason wax is beneficial is that it protects against moisture damage, UV rays from the sun, and scratches, and helps prevent discoloration caused by exposure to extreme temperatures or humidity. While HDPE can stand up to a lot of wear and tear, wax adds another layer of protection.
Once you’ve applied the wax, let it rest for 15-20 minutes, and then buff it out with a soft cloth. This will help remove any excess wax that the furniture hasn’t absorbed and create a shiny, even finish.
Don’t Forget the Hardware
Polywood furniture hardware, including screws, nuts, bolts, and other fasteners, is made of stainless steel which is rust-resistant and holds up well to the elements. But keeping the hardware clean helps avoid corrosion and keeps your outdoor furniture sturdy.
While cleaning the polywood furniture’s surface use the same methods as above and a soft bristle brush (a toothbrush is perfect) to make sure you remove any grime or buildup on the hardware. If you do choose to wax your polywood put a thin layer on the hardware as well. This protects it from moisture and definitely a good idea if you live in a coastal area with salty air.
