Understanding & Distinguishing Between Indoor/Outdoor Home Spaces

Here is a helpful glossary of terms to help you better understand and distinguish between the many spaces we work to design and furnish with our customers.

Balcony

An elevated platform that sticks out from the side of a building on an upper floor, typically with a railing or low wall to enclose it.

Courtyard

An area that is partly or completely enclosed by walls or buildings, exposed to the open air and without a roof. They often include gardens or seating areas where people can gather.

Deck

A flat, roofless area attached to a house or above-ground pool area. These are often made of wood and are surrounded with a railing.

Florida Room

A home addition that features a roof and large windows or screens, typically built onto the side or back wall of a house. These spaces are great for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors while providing protection from bugs and rain.

Four Seasons Porch

An indoor-outdoor room that is insulated and climate-controlled. These spaces can be used comfortably year-round.

Garden Room

A landscaped outdoor room created in a yard by using natural or structural boundaries, like hedges, fences, and trellises, to create a secluded space.

Gazebo

A freestanding outdoor structure with open sides and a roof that provides shade, shelter, and an unobstructed view of the surrounding area.

Patio

A flat outdoor area, often paved or covered by a hard surface, without a roof that adjoins a house or building and is often used for outdoor dining and social gatherings.

Pavilion

An open-sided outdoor structure with a roof that provides some shelter from the elements and is often used for gatherings.

Pergola

An outdoor structure that features vertical posts and an open roof of crossbeams. These are typically used to define an outdoor area, and can often support outdoor climbing plants and provide partial shade.

Poolside

The area adjacent to a pool, also sometimes referred to as the pool deck. This area is typically furnished with pool furniture like lounge chairs and tables with umbrellas.

Porch

A covered, raised platform attached to the outside entrance of a building.

Screened In Porch

A covered outdoor living space attached to a home with sides that are enclosed with screens that allow for open airflow while providing protection from bugs, pests, and light weather.

Sunroom

A room attached to a home that is designed with large windows to let in a lot of natural light while also providing protection from the elements. Sunrooms typically are not insulated for cold weather.

Three Season Room

A type of sunroom designed for use during three seasons of the year – spring, summer, and fall. These rooms are not insulated and usually do not have heat or air conditioning. They provide protection from weather but are typically only used when the weather is mild.
